- Starting Circuit

- The starter is
- engaged by the
- ignition switch.
- When the ignition
- switch is turned it
- energizes the
- solenoid coil. The
- solenoid closes a
- second, heavy duty
- switch that
- provides a direct
- path for current
- from the battery to
- the starter motor.
- A lever, activated
- by the solenoid,
- drives the pinion
- gear into the
- flywheel ring gear.
- When the engine
- starts, a one-way
- clutch prevents the
- armature from being
- spun at high RPM by
- the engine. When
- the ignition key is
- released, a return
- spring in the
- solenoid pulls the
- pinion gear out of
- the flywheel.
