  1. Starting Circuit

  3. The starter is
  4. engaged by the
  5. ignition switch. 
  6. When the ignition
  7. switch is turned it
  8. energizes the
  9. solenoid coil.  The
  10. solenoid closes a
  11. second, heavy duty
  12. switch that
  13. provides a direct
  14. path for current
  15. from the battery to
  16. the starter motor. 
  17. A lever, activated
  18. by the solenoid,
  19. drives the pinion
  20. gear into the
  21. flywheel ring gear. 
  22. When the engine
  23. starts, a one-way
  24. clutch prevents the
  25. armature from being
  26. spun at high RPM by
  27. the engine.  When
  28. the ignition key is
  29. released, a return
  30. spring in the
  31. solenoid pulls the
  32. pinion gear out of
  33. the flywheel.
